I don't think "1st string" or "2nd string" or even "3rd string" means nearly as much on this team as it used to in slower-paced football where the "starters" got almost all the snaps. With the kind of tempo this team wants to run, plus the tempo of other Big 12 schools, plus the hot conditions in Texas and Oklahoma well into the fall, you need about 10 offensive linemen good enough to be "starters" so you can rotate them to give players breaks to rest and rehydrate on the sideline. I think if a guy is anywhere on the two-deep, he's likely to play a lot, and even the 3rd string is likely to see significant PT, if they can produce.

Yeah, no. You do NOT rotate offensive linemen. It's important to have depth in case of injuries or non-performance, but not for rotational purposes. Watch any great offensive line, they don't get rotated. The chemistry of a line is extremely important, the center/QB chemistry is extremely important you really mess that up if you're switching guys in and out.

Yes we'll be running more snaps, yes it'll be harder on them no they will not rotate for rest purposes. WRs and RBs need to rotate because they are running long distances on many plays, they need a play or two sometimes. Do you think we should take Geno out every once in a while so he can catch his breath? Do you think Bitancurt should sit out a few XP attempts because he's been trying to many? There's some positions that rotations don't happen or work.

Coaching staff is talking about rotations and how you need to rest your big guys; I'm basing what I wrote on things they said. Bedenbaugh alternated the right side of the line last year, with Feigt & Spain subbing for Eger & whoever the other right guard was - Bowers?

No you don't rotate your QB - he's not one of the big bodies.

Eger and Bowers were "rotated" because they were abysmal at their job. Why didn't Barclay or Madsen get rotated? Eger and Bowers didn't make starts because of their performance, the reason they kept switching back and forth is because Feight and Spain were not a major upgrade. Our line had a lot of issues last year and our staff was trying to find a solution, nothing really popped, even though they played lights out for a couple games (LSU, BG, Clemson) they were inconsistent and largely below average.

If Spain struggles at LT and Eger continues to struggle at RT then you'll see them get switched around while the coaches try to find a working lineup, but if a linemen is performing the way he should he's not going to miss a single snap on offense, sans injury.

  • No, you dont rotate your center, but I think a O-line rotation will be a big part of our success this year. One of the main reasons for me, is the offensive game of football has changed, especially the pace. In the past teams would grind it out with 3-5 yd runs, and rest in the huddle as long as possible before the next snap. Today, in the blister fast systems that are used, fresh bodies are crucial. Lineman are now asked to sprint down field after a 30 yard pass, get set on the line, and snap the ball as soon as it is placed. To ask the bigs to do that all game long is a stretch.

That would seem to be the case, bill. Coach Bedenbaugh indicated in a video interview at spring practice that in an ideal situation, he would like the #2's on the OL to get 20 snaps a game. Hopefully the #2's can be counted upon to carry that much of the load, giving the starters a breather.
