Thoughts on the season.

  • Hoping everybody chimes in with their opinions.

    Dana's first season.

I think Dana had a good first season, not great. I think once he gets a recruiting class or two of his own this offense will really get going.

    The Defense

Choppy at first. After going with Broderick Jenkins over Pat Miller the defense really came together. A part of that is because the safeties didn't seem to cheat over as much as they had to with Miller. Irvin is a late 1st, early 2nd round talent for the NFL. The last 2 games, GREAT job defense. Couldn't have asked for more.

    Offensive player of the year

Stedman Bailey. How many clutch catches from him? He is the total package. Route running, blocking, good hands, good speed... I like to think of him as a Hines Ward and Steve Smith(panthers) hybrid. He will be playing on Sundays and scoring a lot of touchdowns. Hopefully its for the Steelerspeace

    Defensive player of the year

Could easily go with Julian Miller, Bruce Irvin, or Najee Goode. I'm going with Broderick Jenkins. He really was the one that helped turn this defense around. He sticks to his man, and just has a knack for the ball. He is another future pro on this team that I think will excel at the next level. He will be lock down next season.

Really excited about this incoming recruiting class. If we can pull in a Joel Caleb or Tavon Rooks it will be great.

    Now, lets go Bearcats!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I see lots of positives but also lots of stuff this young team needs to work on this off season. I am kinda curious to see if we add an offensive coordinator on the off season. I can't remember if Holgs ever said he wanted to be his own O-coordinator when he was hired.

  • 90% of the offenses woes are attritubeted to lack of depth .. you can see this team is warn down and exhausted ... especially the oline ... everyone points to OKSt's and Houston's offense well both programs have depth .. WVU is still lacking that ... the OLine is beaten bruised and battered after only having a 6 man rotation for much of the year ... this season was a huge success because of the lack of ideal playmakers and lack of depth ... BRAVO to the coaching staff

  • Maybe my expectations were too high but I expected more from this team than what we saw. Watching a WVU football the past few years is about 90% frustration and 10% exhiliration. Having said that, we found ways to win enough for a cochampionship and if we get to a BCS game, it will have been a successful season because that was our stated goal.

    phillywvu

  • I think everyone forgets the Dana is playing with ol' Bill Stew's players, not that they are all bad and there is alot of talent on the team, i dont think its the kind of players that Dana likes. plus our o-line will get bulied in the Big 12. Once Dana starts getting hnis players i believe our mounties will be a force to be reconed with !!!

    brettheeer

  • I find myself worried with the developement of the offense. I agree depth is an obvious problem and our O line is a huge issue, but 3 or 4 games into the season I really thought when our o line came around we would be very hard to stop. Im not so sure now. While the defense improved greatley by the end of the season ( agree that B. Jenkins had a big part in that) they had to keep us in the last several games.

    woody4wvu

  • Marine...good job; I cann't really agrue with anything you said. I am expecting much more out of the O next year. We need to bring 30 recruits in (7 early entrees) because we are way down in depth.

  • I agree with a lot of it..not so sure about Bruce being 1st/high 2nd round talent. At the beginning of the year I would agree..but not now. He has stepped up as the season went on but we expected a lot from him when he became an every down player..and he didn't really impress me. He could be a very good pash rush specialist but I don't think he could ever been an every down player...which could hurt his draft stock.

Every mock draft has him that high. He isn't going to be a DE in the NFL, he will be a 3-4 OLB. I would LOVE if Pittsburgh took him!

You do realize that every NFL person knows he is playing out of position right?

When Bruce goes to the combine and runs a 4.4 and im sure he will bulk up to around 250 scouts will be drooling.

He lives in the weight room, he has a non stop motor. Im not as certain that he will be a first round pick but if he falls farther than the top half of the 2nd round then people are just ignorant.

Bruce Irvin has dropped off the boards considerably .. the combine and senior game will be key and cruical to him ... as it stands right now he is a 3 rounder at best but the potential is there

  • Good summary and good thread. I would say this season, in a really roundabout way, went about the way most of us expected. I picked WVU to go 10-2, which really should happened if we hadn't handed Louisville a giftwrapped win. If someone had told me in August that WVU would finish 9-3, I likely would have picked LSU, USF and Pitt or Syracuse as the three losses. Not too far off from what ended up happening ... LSU and Syracuse were losses, and Pitt and USF both came down to the wire.

Still, as is always the case, W-L records don't tell the whole tale. The installation of the new offense was not anywhere near as seamless as many of us (myself included) predicted it would be. The defense struggled mightily at times (Cuse and Louisville in particular). Newcomers on D (Francis and Rowell in particular) didn't get up to speed as quickly as we thought they would. Special teams were highly inconsistent at best and a complete nightmare at worst.

If I were to grade the season as a whole, right now I'd give it a solid B. Depending on the bowl performance, that grade could change to a B-/C+ or a B+. We'll see.

    As for awards ...

OFFENSIVE MVP: Geno Smith. I really, really want to say Stedman Bailey here, but I can't. Geno has been the driving force behind the offense this season. I think we lose at least two additional games without him, maybe three.

DEFENSIVE MVP: Julian Miller. Miller played through pain all year to anchor a very thin defensive line and came on strong when we needed him the most. In a transition year for the defense, Miller was reliable and effective. Najee Goode and Terrence Garvin both deserve an honorable mention here.

  • Same as the last few years, less than adequate line and special teams play. Although I do think
special teams would be greatly improved with a high hang time kicker and a more consistent effort. Not enough difference makers.

I was taught to honor and respect my elders. They are getting much harder to find these days.

  • First off I was overly optimistic by predicting 11-1 season. Am I disappointed by how the season played out? No.

Dana love ur coaching style but it showed at times the inexperience at the position. Play calling on 3 & short has to improve and game management.
Offensive MVP goes to Stedman Bailey.

Defense has grown up tremendously towards the end of the season and this is the area I was focused on more in terms of maturation.
The defense will be awesome next year with Rowell Clarke Bryant up front with 3 experienced linebackers in Rigg Snow Barber and the emergence of Jenkins is huge to add to experienced secondary.
Co Defensive MVP Julien Miller and Brodrick Jenkins.

  • Marine I know ur very adament about getting Stoops and how JC defense is only good 1 out of 4 years but I think JC accelerated the learning curve of his defense this year.

If Bruce falls to the 3rd round, what a steal someone will get. Would be along the lines of stealing Tom Brady in the 6th (Imo), just hoping he will fall all the way to my Steelers pray. They love fast motor types!

I have been telling Bruce all year that I hope he ends up with the Steelers or someone that runs a similar type of defense.

I want Irvin to sit behind James Harrison for a year or two before taking over. Can you imagine a talent like Irvin learning from James Harrison?

Im glad I read thru everyone's responses before putting my thoughts out there, because this is almost identical to what I was going to write. biggrin

Only other thing I would add is I think the reason that our Offense seemed to slow down towards the end of the season is our OL, after showing much improvement at the beginning of the season, just simply wore down due to lack of quality depth.

He will be happy with whatever team drafts him, my opinion from talking to him is he wants to play for Rex Ryan and that defense or Atlanta since its home.

  • I did a write up of my thoughts based on the stats we saw this year. That was through the USF game. From a Koolaid drinking fans perspective, this season is a success if Cincinnati does their part tomorrow. If not this season is a disappointment in my humble opinion. The last three weeks could have several spins placed upon them. A. The team is underachieving why are these teams even in a game with us. B. Wow what a great example of a team playing to the last snap. C. What happened to our offense? D. Why can't our special teams be consistent. If I step out of my my fandimonium long enought to assess this season then, the truth is that the Holgorsen experiment should not be graded in year 1. Plenty of things happened this season that a long-tenured coach would have a tough time navigating through. Dana Holgorsen will be a success at WVU if he has the time to put all of the pieces together. I see big things in the Big 12 future.
