Rule Changes

  • We all know about the kickoff being moved up 5 yds to discourage returns, but from my understanding there are some new rules that will have serious implications to the game. First they are bringing back the halo rule for punts, which doesnt bother me. Second, the ball has to touch the ground two times before the kicking team can touch the ball, and the recieving team can call fair catch after the first bounce. So, the days of the one bounce and big hop for a jump ball are over. And last are the the new helmet rules. If a players helmet comes off, the player has to sit out the next play, no matter what the case. So it could be the next to last play of the game and you will have to put in a sub weather its the QB of whoever. Also the refs have the option to blow the whistle mid play if a helmet comes off. And if a defenders comes off and he continues to pursue it could be a 15yd penalty. Lastly if a players helmet comes off in the last minute of the game, there will be a 10 second runoff. So if Stedmans' helmet comes off on that diving grab against USF, they would have run the clock, end of regulation. I realize they are trying to improve player safety, but I think these politically correct rules are taking away the essence of the game.

I understand why but I dont agree with the 10 second run off or the penalty for a defender continuing a play.

  • depending on how the helmet comes off is whether or not the player should sit a play .. if he got hit and tackled hard and it came off ... ok but if it was just ripped off by the defender then thats bullshit ... i will say 100% for sure that will cost atleast 1 team a W this year becasue the QB will have to sit a play and that play be 4th down with the game on the line

  • I thought that it came off due to illegal contact then they would have to sit out.

I would think that it should be the only time they would not have to sit out, is if someone knocked it off illegally.

  • So, if the helmet is intentionally jerked off your star players head but it's not necessarily seen by the officials, you're without him for the next play.. Total horse$#!+ in my book. . This rule is going to cost teams games, unecessarily. I also feel it has the potential to be abused. .

Agreed. Wait till the 10 second runoff costs someone a win. For example when Michigan St. beat Wisconson on that Hail Mary, had a players helmet came off the play before, time expires with the runoff, and Wisconson is in the National Championship discussion.
