Move to BIG 12

  • About a week ago an article was printed in the Daily Mail, detailing the popularity of the move the Big 12 conference. The results, for me at least, were quite suprising. Only 40% were supportive of the move, 20% opposed, and 40% indifferent. Yes, I agree that geographically, it would have made more sense to come on board with the ACC or SEC. But guess what, they didnt want us. Looking at the landscape of college football, and especially now that the AQ will be taken away, I think we have been thrown a life preserver, that I will embrace with open arms. Just curious do only 40% of this baord believe it was a positive move? And for those still opposed, I would like to hear, with an open mind, your opinion.

Personally i love the move to the Big12
In arguably the 2nd best football and 2nd best bball concerence now with arguements to being the best

These Rankins are where WVU would stack up in the conference not ranked by conference

  • I am happy with the move with one reservation. I worry about the recruiting in Florida with us playing at WVU an the mid west. We depend alot on the Sunshine State an not playing any games there could hurt. Thats why an FSU or a Miami to the Big 12 would be favorable. I do agree with MJ as he said above its arguably the 2nd best in F-ball an B-ball. An it was jump ship an like Bill said it was a welcome life preserver, an not a moment to soon.

  • So glad we didn't go to the terrible ACC. By far the least amount of money of any major conference. A conference that is a basketball first conference. A conference filled with half filled stadiums. lol, no thanks.

I'll take the Big 12. A real football conference with more money and better bowl tie-ins. ACC would have been my LAST choice. Just a terrible conference.

  • Thanks for the breakdown, MJScragg. Just curious on the fan attendence and stadium size, I thought the SEC had some of the biggest stadiums around and filled them regularly?

  • Cant say for sure on size but the SEC stadiums are always packed. When I think of big stadiums I think of the Big 10 but that may be based soley on Ohio State an Michigan.

    wvruger71

  • Just looked it up and 8 SEC schools have stadiums of 80,000 plus. I think we compare more favorably to the Big 12 with stadium size.

  • Those rankings are only taking in current stadiums vs WVU stadium ... WVU would be one of the tops in the ACC in stadium size and fan attendance while middle road big12 and bottom of the barrell in the sec

  • Among the fans ticket sales and donations are up. People are extremely excited. Do you go to dailymail.com ... I don't and neither do many of our fans

I agree, Coastal Eer, I just wanted to see if the board shared the same sentiment (or even close) to the general public. I would still like to hear from those who still have reservations regarding this move.

  • I am very happy with the move
    1. The football is going to be outstanding; so is the basketball.
    2. I don't want to be somewhere I'm not wanted.
    3. I have access to an airport and I know what goes on there.

  • I wonder who their target group was? At 40% indifferent, it sure wasn't sports fans. If you follow Mountaineer sports, you definately had a preference. Also, just because the popularity was only 40%, that doesn't necessarily reflect on the popularity of leaving the Big East, but rather what conference you would have preferred going to. I would have preferred the SEC, but I'm tickled pink to be in the Big XII. Can't wait!

  • Just my two cents. I believe down the road perhaps in 7 to 10 years we will again be in an eastern conference. WVU in the Big 12 makes about as much sense as UCLA being in the Big East. Once this conference realignment plays out and things are stabalized, schools will realize that geographics is what really drives the fans, players, and coaches.

  • The grant of rights is rumored to be extended to 13 years with the new TV contact so we cannot be out on 7 years. Also were not that far away. Its about the same as USF or Maimi in the big East all those years. Especially once some other eastern teams join

  • Just my opinion: WVU alumni are 98% for the move to the Big 12.
Those who I have stayed in contact from my era (late 60's to early 70's grads) are 100% behind the move to the Big 12

  • AS WITH ANY POLL, RESULTS ARE BASED ON THE PEOPLE SAMPLED. IF THE SAMPLE WAS THE CHARLESTON AREA, IT MAY NOT BE INDICATIVE OF THE ENTIRE STATE. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE IT WAS NOT DONE IN A SCIENTIFIC MANNER. I AM ALWAYS LEERY OF RANDOM POLLS.

  • Much like WVruger71, I'm excited about the move, but i too fear without a presence in FL our recruiting will fall off in that state.. I'm hoping FSU will fix that issue. I also think with expansion and the right choices, the Big 12 can rival the SEC for the top football conference.

  • I either read that article or one similar and they broke it down further with men vs women, age brackets, and income. It was obvious that higher income, people who could afford to travel voted much more favorable for the move than the lower income groups. Men were also much more in favor, and less on the no opinion side. So I took it for what it was worth, not much. If you're a football fan and love WVU, it had to happen because there were no other choices. Have to make the best of it.

  • The whole reason I posed this question, was to see if the opinion of the informed football fan was a little different, or drastically different. I think my question has been overwhelming answered with a resounding, YES! Although 70% polled, claimed to be college football fans, I think the line is clear between a casual fan and those on this baord who really know whats going on. Proud as ever to be a member of EerSports.

As good as the SEC is, I think they are overrated. They have won all those championships, but they were somewhat lucky along the way. I think Oklahoma State could have beaten LSU, and without CAM Auburn does not win and if Colt does not get hurt I liked our chances against Alabama. They have had some breaks go their way.

I believe with the addition of West Virginia and TCU our conference just got that much better and any additional new teams will just be cherries on top of what we are building.

I hate having all the conferences spread across the country because it sucks for the fans, but tickets don’t pay for sports it’s the networks and they want completion week in and week out. And now they got it.

    Welcome!!!

rockonI agree with Celina Horn the Big 12 is a much improved conf. with Wv and Tcu.Wv has been a sucsessful team for a long time which cant be said for either atm or misory. We are exited to have another high power program with us and with the addition of an FSU orClemson i think we could say it whould be a better conference top to bottom than the sec.The sec has AL,LSU and somtimes Florida. The BIG12 now has WV,TX,OU, i dont think to many schools whould want to play all three of these teams every year.Add a FSU and it whould tip yhe balance to us.Welcome to the BIG12 and never forget ou sucks!!!!
