I wonder how David Smith feels now..

  • ...After Oklahoma just got a committment from Greg Bryant AND Keith Ford. Dude is never going to see the field.

  • You never know what can happen with injuries and so forth... who knows if they ever make it because of grades etc.....

I am not sure I understand the reason to diss a kid because he picked another school over us....

I've refered to this in other posts, but I've never understood why all these kids want to go to Brand Name schools where they are five deep at every postition with 4 and 5 star kids. I point to Matt Castle as an example, good enough to be a pro, but never saw the field in college behind Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. I would think every now and then one of these players would want to go to a place they could be a star. I know everybody wants to play for a winner, but at WVU, you can play for a winner AND be a star.

That is what our coaches should be telling recruits...it is their job to sell WVU

I think that's right on the money. Last years Heisman winner came from Baylor. Would he have started ahead of Landry Jones at OK, Luck at Stanford, or Barkley at USC? I'm betting that, with his athleticism, we would have been moved to WR early on in his career. Maybe that's how he ended up at Baylor and got his QB shot, similiar to the Pat White situation. Different sport, but same scenerio with KJ. He is super, but no way he gets the minutes to put up 2nd team All-American numbers if he were at UK or KU. It seems like we're a "tweener" school, i.e., the 4 or 5* wants to go to OK because they're "Oklahoma." The 3* goes to Rutgers so he can play right away. Seems we're lost in between.

  • I see your point to a degree although I think we get to "pick" our favorite 3-stars for the most part. We get the occasional 4* but I doubt someone doesn't choose us because they can play more somewhere else. We've never had enough depth to scare too many people off to a Rutgers (right?). Having said that, based on the amount of skill positions we have right now, I could see where next year is more focused on big uglies, LB's, etc but I think based on DH's system we're gonna continue to get the MOST amount of interest from top notch WRs and QBs....and RBs to an extent.

Or you could look at it from the perspective that even those teams backups make it in the NFL, but WVU hasnt had a major contributor in the league for several years.

Yep, I see where you're coming from. Just using Rutgers a s a random example, though. To further expound, I think it is like bill c said, and also what you said about big uglies. I think it varies from year to year and position by position. If you're a 3* OL/DL lineman, you may be very interested in WVU this year, if you're a 3* WR, not so much. If you're a 5*, you're looking at the Brand Names first, regardless of position. I'm just looking forward to being a Brand Name sooner (no pun intended) than later.

  • I hear ya - it's going to be extraordinarily difficult for us to compete over the long haul in the B12 going against big money and big reputation teams like OU, TX (unless we keep DH and Luck around awhile and continue to build but we NEED significantly more fan support). Having said that, just about the only coach/program in the country I am scared of year in and year out is Saban and Bama. The Pontiff at tOSU could become a force to be reckoned with but I think his best days are behind him.

Similar to 2007, we'll need a perfect storm of circumstances to get us into a NC game. I am confident it can happen again, but we'll be a second tier program for the forseeable future. I can't wait to see how we do this year against better competition. We have seven home games plus a semi-home game at JMU in D.C. plus Year 2 of the DH offensive system with Geno, Tavon, Steddy, etc. all back.
