I don't know if Stewart wants the job. I am bracing myself for WVU not being able to bring in a big time DC or even one better than Casteel.

  • With the money WVU is willing to pay and interest from the B12's top programs DC already, I think we will be fine even if things fall through with Stewart. The wait may be getting other coaches to join Stewart moreso than waiting on Stewart himself ( just a thought on my part) and waiting to introduce all of them as a group but either way Luck, DH and co. will put together exactly what they want from a style standpoint that will fit what DH wants to do and we will go from there. But I'm with some of you guys, the waiting sucks.

  • I really think we'll be fine. We do have a national reputation. The three BCS wins in so short a time does that. Will we lose a recruit or two that we might have otherwise gotten? It's possible, certainly. But change is eternal, and there is always a wall of worry IMO. It's just a question of what's the concern du jour.

Casteel's delayed announcement kept the spotlight off him during the orange bowl, and arguably facilitated our effort there. On the other hand, it's delayed the process of vetting the potential candidates to replace him and his assistants. We can't afford a hire who has baggage. There is no worse thing that can happen to a program than happened to Pitt last year when its new HC was charged with domestic battery. Admittedly, that apparently happened after the hiring took place. But due diligence is more important than a decision made in haste because of the impending LOI day.

Good advice Sam. The worse thing that could happen is a bad character choice. We all would love to get this part over and move on with our recruits, but we need to get that part correct.

  • Stewart's name was thrown out a couple of weeks ago and nobody had ever heard of him. Now some are acting as though he is something special. He could be the best option when it is all said and done but......,,

How about we start our own list. I will start with the obvious ones.

    1) venables- big 12 experience great recruiter. Easily number 1 choice
    2) Shannon- great recruiter in Florida and can coach D. Who cares if he would be. Short term guy
    3) Dunlap- keeps continuity, we could do worse
    4) Stewart- Houston was not known for D
    5) tommy Bowden- he can recruit and has a clear WVU connection. He has a ton of experience and could figure out how to be a DC
    6) Willie Martinez- fired from UGA because he coud not stop Floridas offense. Nobody else could.

You are absolutely clueless when it comes to Stewart. Clueless.

Check the stats from before he got to Houston, and then the 2 years he was at Houston. He GREATLY improved that defense. He is the best option over Shannon and Venables(lol at Venables). Venables is a joke.

Is it really necessary to be so nasty about it, Marine? It's not like he said Stewart sucked or anything. Just said most people had never heard of him, which is true, and that Houston wasn't known for their defense, which is also true.

Is that because its Houston, or is that because people are ignorant about Stewart? He took a 62nd ranked defense and made them into a 30-35 ranked defense in 1 season. He had the #2 ranked redzone defense, and forces turnovers like nobodies business. I would MUCH rather have him than Casteel. A guy that has inflated stats going up against offenses worse than CUSA offenses.

Again, Ignorance about a man doesn't make what they say true. It means they don't know any better. That is just my opinion. Not sure how I got nasty. Venables is a damn joke, and that is why he was replaced at Oklahoma.

  • I would be looking for someone who can stop the Big 12 OFFENSES. Most of the coaches that have been mentioned have shown they can't on a regular basis. Oklahoma had a good defense in 2009, but other than that has not been stellar, and the other schools these coaches are coming from have even worse statistics. Why does everyone seem enamored with them?

To be fair, Stewart wasn't at Houston for very long, and they did show a nice improvement in his time there. Plus, kids will love his NFL ties/experience.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you about Stewart. I like him, I think he did a good job at Houston- their defense improved a bunch in a short period of time, and I wanted him more than Venables. Unfortunately, we have no say so in who is hired.

  • I honestly believe Holgs hired his buddy Deforest way to early, he also promised him a bigger title. My guess is that these big name guys are having a very hard time with a forced Co-Title. They may also be trying to keep Dunlap, which Im sure no D-Coordinator wants to be told who his assistants are. This hasnt been the best coaching search Ive ever witnessed.

Agree with the NFL ties, if you want to get top recruits, they are a must!

  • NDSU ranked 7th nationally in both scoring defense (18.21 ppg) and turnover margin (+1.07 avg.), and 15th in pass efficiency defense and 19th in sacks. It’s his sixth year in the program. Hazelton was defensive line coach for NDSU from 2007-09. He was a former graduate assistant for the Bison in 2000 and 2001. Hazelton worked closely with Casey "Gus" Bradley, who is currently defensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks and former NDSU assistant coach when he began his career. Hazelton has been a part of several impressive defensive coaching staffs since coming back to Fargo. In the 2008, North Dakota State led the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision(FCS) in pass defense (116.82 ypg), and ranked 3rd in sacks (3.36 avg/g), 5th in total defense (254 ypg) and tackles for loss (8.55 avg/g), and 19th in scoring
