Four Stations Join Red Hot New Mountaineer Sports Network

  • Press Release

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., (July 30, 2013) – In the dog days of summer, the hottest new radio programming across America is shaping up to be West Virginia Mountaineers football.

As the new sports radio network quickly forms for West Virginia University, four additional station affiliates have joined the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG. The latest stations signing on to the burgeoning network are: WELD-FM in Fisher, WV; WVOW-AM/WVOW-FM in Logan, WV, WKQR-FM in Mullens, WV, and WETZ-AM/WYMJ-FM in New Martinsville, WV.

The stations will each air air football, men’s basketball along with their respective coaches’ shows and a daily “Mountaineer Minute” report.

The new Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG now has nine affiliate stations that will provide excellent coverage of WVU sports.

West Virginia University and IMG College, which operates the nation’s largest independent sports radio network, recently formed a broad 12-year multimedia rights and sponsorship partnership including exclusive representation and management of game broadcasts and coaches’ shows on the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG beginning in the 2013-14 season.

“WELD radio has a long tradition of broadcasting Mountaineer sports to the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia, and we look forward to continuing that tradition with programming from IMG,” said station owner Curtis Durst. “I have had experience of working with IMG at other radio stations and have always found IMG to be staffed by professional individuals who are committed to offering top quality broadcasts.”

“WKQR-FM, KISS-FM, is proud to join the IMG family for complete coverage of the West Virginia Mountaineers,” said station owner Bob Spencer. “We had the pleasure of working with Robert Smith and IMG in airing select Marshall games over the past several years. Knowing IMG’s professionalism and commitment to college sports, we look forward in joining them to deliver WVU games and coaches shows to the best and most loyal fans on earth. Go Mountaineers!”

Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG plans to add four hours of pre- and post-game coverage commensurate with a program of West Virginia’s scope and appeal. Pregame shows will expand from one hour to 3.5 hours and postgame shows to two hours from 30 minutes. Details on the play-by-play and color commentary team will be announced in the future.

“IMG College is very excited to welcome these station groups to the nation’s largest independent sports radio network,” said Joe Potter, Senior Vice President, Operations, IMG College. “Affiliate reaction to the new Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG has been overwhelmingly positive. There’s tremendous anticipation for the college football season, and we’re very excited to bring to fans all the action as we expand the game day programming.”

    WVU’s current radio lineup includes:

    WELD-FM Fisher, WV

    WETZ/WYMJ-FM New Martinsville, WV

    WKQR-FM Mullens, WV

    WMTD Hinton (Beckley), WV

    WRLF/WTCS-FM Fairmont, WV

    WVOW/WVOW-FM Logan, WV

  • They are getting all the fringe markets so far. All of the big markets like Morgantown, Clarksburg/Bridgeport, Parkersburg, Martinsburg and etc... will take longer(they did get Fairmont) and Beckley), due to the probable size of the financial obligation to IMG. I wonder how many stations will actually carry the entire 8 or so hours vs stations that only carry the one pregame and the actual game. I think the Morgantown affiliate is going to be the toughest. WCLG would have a really hard time paying Millions to carry the full day long broadcast, IMO.

  • Looks like every area in WV will have a radio affiliate before its said and done.

  • Anyone have any clue as to how they will handle internet radio for us WV expats living elsewhere? Will they leave it up to the individual stations or will they stream online themselves?

  • Hoping for a team of Caridi/Drenning

Problem is, we didn’t know what we were doing either. But when we didn’t know what we were doing, we were pretty good at it….. Bob Huggins
