The university has put out a statement that Bill Stewart has passed away... sad news!

Our prayers go out to his family. He was my favorite WVU coach because he beat OU.

I was really sorry to read about Coach Stewart's passing. My prayers go out to his family, friends and the entire WVU community - you lost a man who loved Mountaineer football.

Thank you for joining us today as we mourn a true Mountaineer. Hopefully you'll also be joining us in the Big 12 soon!

Very sad to hear about this tragic news. I can't remember who West Virginia first game under Stewart was against, was it Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl? I just remember he had the biggest smile on his face during the half-time interview telling the sideline reporter to the effect of, "isn't this fun?" Hearing about how he wanted so badly to become WVU's coach and from that half-time interview on, I wanted Bill Stewart to be successful because he exemplified loyalty and love for an university which is hard to find in coaching these days.

College Football lost a good one today.

Yep, it was the Fiesta Bowl versus Oklahoma. Thank you for appreciating Stew's character and coming by to say so; hope we see your Seminoles in the Big 12 with us (and those same Sooners) soon.

  • My favorite Stewart quote of all time, "we want men of character, not characters". Thing is, he meant it. Here was a man more concearned with the lifelong development of young men than wins and losses. In a world obsessed with trophies and titles, stood a man that realized that these were just kids, and in the bigger picture of life, that this was truly, only a game. During such a critical period in the minds of so many affected youths, when it came to helping them choose the right path in life, Bill Stewarts influence left no doubt.

  • Mountaineers everywhere are saddened at the death of Coach Stew. He truly loved WVU, the state of West Virginia and the people of West Virginia. But, he was at his best, being a husband and a father. He will be missed by all he touched in life. Our prayers are with the family at this time of loss.

    REST IN PEACE, COACH STEWARD
