Chris, is Sonny Odogwu really coming to wvu

  • Could jus be a rumor, but I didnt kno if u hearrd anything on ur end, I remember them saying he is a RAW prospect only has been playing a cpl yrs, but 6'9 270, jus stick him at nose tackle and tell him to fill the A gaps lol

  • 6'9 is WAY to tall for a nose tackle. The interior of those lines is shorter and more stout. If I was a center and the nose guard was 6'9 I'd have an absolute field day, you know how easy it would be to get leverage on him? At his size Offensive Tackle is really the only position he'd be suited for.

  • Nah, leverage is taught with technique. But, at 6-9 270, he would need to bulk up. He wouldnt be heavy enough

You can have all the technique in the world but if you're 6'9 you're going to be insanely uncomfortable trying to get underneath a 6'3 center. The lower they have to make themselves go the more awkward a position they have to get in.

Look at the NFL most 0 technique NTs aren't taller than 6'3 or so. Centers are usually around the same height. Like I said, a 6'3 center has technique to gain leverage too and he would have an absolute field day pushing around a tall sucker like that.

  • Lol, how many 6'9 people are there that play football period. Not worth arguing about, I do know that he would be an ol, but add 50 pounds to his frame and work from a 4 technique and it can be done if his technique is good. You dont ever see a 6'9 NG, because you don't ever see a 6'9 football player

You don't see many 6'9 football players because they have very limited options on the field. And a 4 technique is nowhere near a 0 technique. If you put him at DE, he might be able to get upfield and rush the passer (assuming he has those skills) but again if it's a run block he's going to get popped under his shoulder pads and drove back a mile. He could weigh 500 lbs he's still not going to do much at that height.

  • wvu15 is right. Period. 6 foot to 6'3" is ideal for a NG. I thought we just had defensive linemen now, instead of a NG, because he doesn't line up right over the center anymore ? Am I wrong ?

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional !

  • Wouldn't it be cool to have Owusu and Odogwu at WVU.

NG is one of the most important positions in the 3-4.

Whenever we play a 3-4 we will have a nose guard. Casey Hampton, Shaun Rodgers and Vince Wilfork are a few NG's in NFL 3-4 schemes. Most of the time to play a true 3-4 you need a Monster(320+) Nose. We will play a hybrid defense this year. Some will be surprised how similar it will look to a 3-3-5. Actually when we are in a Nickel set, which will be the majority of snaps in the Big XII, we will probably be playing a 3-3-5 a bunch.

First, all defenses are essentially the same 3-3-5 3-4 4-3 etc..., the key difference we will see this year is the aggression and risk taking. Casteel played it very conservatively, that's why we gave up few big plays and a lot of short yards. This year we'll give up more big plays, but our D will be running around and have a lot more options to make their own big play.

Second, I do remember reading that our NG would line up offset some as a 1 technique as opposed to the 0. To the untrained eye it will be almost unnoticeable but scheme wise it'll be a great thing IMO.
