Big 12, ESPN near TV rights extension

  • Under the new terms, each Big 12 school will average just under $20 million a year!

This is huge, only one thing to say, THANK YOU, MR LUCK!

Big 12, ESPN near TV rights extension - SportsBusiness Daily | SportsBusiness Journal

The Big 12 is on the verge of a blockbuster TV contract that will put its media revenue among the top tier of college conferences, despite losing several marquee programs in the last two years. The Big 12 and ESPN are nearing an extension that will earn the conference combined with its Fox T

  • Really 3 hrs & no one has commentted on this? This is a fairly big deal, an extra 5 million per team/season thru 2025.

  • Interesting the Big 12 may not expand any further. Sorry about the slow reply but my favorite NFL team is currently engaged in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes! Go Eers and Go Broncos!!!

  • Im curious if this will actually put a stop or at least slow down further expansion. I noticed a few comments that mentioned "expansion" would somehow be worked into the contract language. Im personally fine and would prefer ataying at 10 teams....unless of course they could land FSU, ND, or another big name. I really dont care to see adding Louisville or a BYU

  • I guess I have mixed emotions on this news. Obviously the pros are more money, (duh, winning) and I think it should promote a more secure conference environment. The big con (for me any way) is the fact that this would slow or stop conference expansion. I was hoping to conect the dots geographically so to speak with teams toward the east, ie. Louisville, Cincy, and or a few ACC teams. Once we are locked in money wise, nobody is going to want to split the pie 2 to 4 more times. I thought the big 12 would near the end of their current contract, add a few teams, and then negotiate for an even larger contract. Of course that was part of the downfall of the BE. They should have taken the offer when available. In the end I guess a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. P.S, once we are full share members 20 mil./yr. should make quick work of our exit fees!

  • It's nice to be aboard a different boat in the hot tub watching the USS Big East go to the bottom.

  • I read in the Dennis Dodd's article on this that the deal could be worth even more with 11-12 teams. So see the way I read this is it now puts us in better position to go "shopping" for expansion. We are now in the same ball park as the SEC & B10 with this & significantly higher than ACC. This puts us in great position to negotiate with the FSU/Clemson/MD/ND to lure in an even bigger piece of the pie. Rumors of anywhere from 2M-8M per team bump when the 11-12 teams are added, depending on who it is. That is why I really dont care to hear the Lville & Cincy names being mentioned cause there are much bigger fish out there to be caught!

This is my understanding as well. The ACC deal tops out at $15 million per team and that includes Tier 1,2 and 3. Our new Big 12 deal does not include Tier 3 or a conference championship game. The Big 12 deal allows for expansion so ACC teams could be assured of $25 million a year, a 75% increase.

  • This is great news of course but dont think for one second that the other conferences are going to sit idly by and watch this happen....everyone else will re-negotiate their deals over the next couple years and the money grab will be ON. Particularly the Ess Eee Seeee.

  • I agree, if the B12 could get Notre Dame the money would be fantastic but I don't look for ND to go anywhere until the BIG starts to reneg, then I think they bolt to them. I still think FSU and Clemson are in the B12 crosshairs, the SEC can prob offer more money but USCe and UF don't want them in so that might push them our way by default the BigEast and ACC arent going to have the money lure that the B12 has and at the end of they day thats what it's all about right now. Then again if the pattern holds Georgia Tech and Maryland may be the targets for their tv markets.

I would think the new ACC deal will be more than that. Just can't imagine all three tiers coming up only to that guesstimate.

Here is a link on the ACC deal being reopened & getting 15M up from the 12.9M before sPitt & Cuse.

ACC expansion will pay off in new TV deal - SportsBusiness Daily | SportsBusiness Journal

Editor's note: This story is revised from the print edition. ACC expansion will mean at least $1 million to $2 million a year in additional revenue for each of the conferences existing schools, according to sources privy to discussions between the league and ESPN. The addition of Pittsburgh

i remember reading that a while back but i just keep thinking the TV sets that the ACC has to offer now can bring the number up higher.

I hope you are right gwinn.

if the ACC can't muster around 17-18 million, which includes all 3 Tiers, then they are prime for the taking. FSU and Clemson to the Big 12 could make 23 million annually and thats ONLY Tier 1 and Tier 2 package. Once they open Tier 3, we are talking the possibility of making close to 27-30 million. (rough estimate based off Kansas Tier 3 and Texas Tier 3. If I recall correctly, Oklahoma is working on their Tier 3 now)

  • After we pay the Big 12 back I wonder what the plans are for spending all this money?

  • Here's the best explanation I've seen: he starts out discussing why some like the 10 team format. One thing not mentioned is that the schools will sign over their rights until 2025, so nobody's leaving, and the conference becomes one of the most stable in the country.

Everyone likes the 10-team format they have now. However, as I stated in the ACC thread, they will expand if the right teams are receptive to their inquiries. There is no doubt they will reach out to Florida State, Miami, GA Tech, Clemson, NC State, VA Tech, and Arkansas, and possibly Pitt & Maryland (along w/ Louisville, whom they've already had discussions with). If the right combination of teams are interested, they'll make a move. If not, they'll stand pat with 10.
The Big XII made a number of strategically brilliant moves w/ this latest contract. If they sign at least 2 additional teams (there are restrictions on whom), there is an automatic escalator in the contract that will raise the total payout by $2.05M per team (this based on the added conference championship game). And, they negotiated an opt out clause that will allow them out of the deal to take it to market if they expand to 12 or further, with ESPN/ABC having the right of first refusal on the contract. Once the language of the contract makes its way back to the ACC, I think there will be some nervous presidents & a nervous commissioner, b/c the Big XII essentially just got a license to hunt, with guaranteed ammo.
And, what's better, the ABC/ESPN/Fox contracts the Big XII has are only for Tier 1 & Tier 2 broadcasts. So, teams are free to shop their Tier 3 rights. So, just like Texas is netting $10M/season, and KU is netting $8M/season from Tier 3, Florida State, Clemson, etc will have the ability to make $20M + millions more on Tier 3, which would put them above the highest paid SEC teams.
