West Virginia (11-11, 4-5) has won back-to-back games and heads to TCU (10-12, 1-8), a team the Mountaineers beat by 21 just two weeks ago and who had not won a Big12 game this season..... until Wednesday, when the Horned Frogs were amazingly protective of their homecourt and defeated former No. 1 team in the country, the Kansas Jayhawks.
The game is set for a 4:00PM ET tip and will be televised on MASN in the Mid-Atlantic Region, ALTITUDE out West and on ESPN3.com and WatchESPN apps for anyone not in those viewing areas.
Here are three keys to a Mountaineer victory today.
1. Making Shots is Important - I wouldn't go so far as to shay that West Virginia shot well, but the 43.1% they did shoot against TCU the first time around was four points higher than what they were averaging at the time. Even just an average night shooting - and 43.1% would be roughly 175th out of 345 teams right now - can help boost WVU to victory over most teams in the country.
2. Boxing Out is Vital - TCU is horrendous at rebounding the ball (263rd in the country), while West Virginia is only adequate (111th). However, in the last matchup, the Mountaineers outrebounded the Horned Frogs by 10 and finished with a total of 17 offensive rebounds, providing plenty of second chance points.
3. Ball Pressure is King - Bob Huggins has preached it since Day One, but West Virginia is best when they are making the other team uncomfortable. Under normal circumstances, TCU is abysmal passing the ball (330th in the nation in assists). If WVU can find a way to pressure them into even more turnovers, the Mountaineers will make things a lot easier on themselves. It worked last time - the Horned Frogs turned the ball over 17 times when they came to the Coliseum.
