Spring Primer: 2-4-7

Ford Childress

Childress will battle for the starting QB position this spring.

Two redshirt freshmen to start, four newcomers to make the two-deep and seven positions up for grabs this spring.

    • Chris, did you write this before you left for Mexico? Some inconsistencies here with stuff Dana said in is presser Tuesday: Pat Eger will move inside and get tried at center, Mark Glowinski will move to guard, and Dante Campbell is out for the spring due to off-season surgery (shoulder, IIRC). Jewone Snow is also either out or limited to no-contact for spring.

    • Yes, ae. I wrote this before Mexico.

The only part that surprises me about those notes is Eger moving to center.

He's back now. If you haven't notice he's been gone for the past few days.

    • Chris what about Rawlins? Dana mentioned he was a talent the other day. They said they weren't going to talk much about him yet because he hasn't practiced yet. I would be surprised if Rawlins doesn't start coming on as spring progresses. He is the dual threat we could use. I hope Rawlins is working hard and focused.

I was surprised by that, too, and wonder what it means for Stone Underwood. Of course he won't be in Morgantown until June and the team will need centers for spring. Also have to wonder what that implies about the staff's view of Matteo's potential (I doubt it implies anything about Tezeno, given that he's a true freshman).

    • Let me rephrase - that someone with experience moved down to center (at least for the spring) does not surprise me at all. The fact that it was Eger does. Not that I think he would do a bad job, just surprises me, that's all.

Probably means they like Spain and Feigt at tackle, and word is Spain is leaner and fitter than he's ever been. Don't think they would've moved Glowinski to guard if they had any doubts about the tackles. But Crook hasn't seen these guys with pads on yet, so it could all change over the course of spring and fall.

    • Chris do you really think Logan Moore has a chance? I don't see him being any better than 4th team. I can see Millard transferring and I think Rawlins ends up being 2nd team and gets forced into playing. Rawlins has upside. Its all about being focused and working hard for him.

Either way I think 2013 offense looks pretty down. We have a really unproven and average group of WR's and RB's with the usual average WVU o-line. Ford is a predictable pocket passer with no running ability. Dreamius better be a superstar at RB or were gong to be down on offense in 2013. Holgs has issues.

    • I haven't seen Logan play yet, personally, but those close to the team say he's been fairly impressive. Does that mean he will see the field? I still doubt it, but we'll see.

I think Rawlins brings a dynamic that no one else on the team has, so the possibility of him seeing the field is still there. He just really needs to improve his passing. It's all about accuracy in this offense and he has not shown it consistently, yet.

    • You would think the coaches will make Rawlins better as far as mechanics and accuracy when it comes to passing. They are paid lots to do that. I would be surprised if the 6-3 athletic wonder doesn't develop into a good QB here at some point. In a ideal situation he would redshirt but Holgerson's job is on the line and he will be desperate for production at all costs in 2013. I look forward to the spring.

As I recall, Logan Moore had good rushing stats at Fairmont State. I don't expect to see him on the field next fall, but I do think he is the best walk on QB we've had on the roster in my memory.
