- The basketball team has an all-time record of 16-17. In 1962, Rod Thorn scored 30 points to lift West Virginia over rival Virginia Tech, 85-81, after they had fallen behind for most of the game.

- In 1970, former wide receiver Mike Baker was born. A wideout in the early 90's, Baker was the leading receiver for the undefeated 1993 squad, catching 42 passes for 719 yards and five touchdowns (Jay Kearney had more yards, but less receptions). He finished his career with 71 grabs for 1,069 yards and seven scores.
