- The basketball team has an all-time record of 18-9. In 1962, Rod Thorn scored 22 points, pulled down 19 rebounds and dished out six assists to help the Mountaineers defeat Virginia Military, 101-79. Future head coach Gale Catlett added 10 points off the bench.

- In 1972, former basketball star Ricky Robinson was born. Robinson averaged 12 points and 6.5 rebounds during his four years in Morgantown. He finished his career in the Top 25 in both scoring and rebounding.
